Deep brain surgery (DBS) is an intervention available to some people with parkinsonism that tends to work especially well for motor symptoms, e.g. tremor. In this course, we'll talk about what might make someone an especially good / bad candidate for DBS. We'll discuss the different target areas for DBS (STN vs GPi) and the pros/ cons of each. What can be expected in terms of side effects, recovery time, and cost will be reviewed.
Focused Ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging intervention only offered at a few clinics globally. FUS requires no opening of the skull, wires, or batteries. 1024 ultrasound waves converge on a target, turning sonic energy into thermal energy, and destroying a targeted piece of tissue. We'll compare the FUS procedures in the United States to those being used in Europe and where we think the field is headed.

Michele Tagliati, MD
Michele Tagliati, MD is the Director of the Movement Disorders Program, Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology, and Professor of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, CA.Dr. Tagliati pioneered the use of DBS in Parkinson's and dystonia, and his work contributed advances in the definition of outcome predictors and therapeutic settings of DBS. He is currently involved in research on the role of nonmotor and nondopaminergic mechanisms in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's.
Dr. Daniel Jeanmonod
Dr. Daniel Jeanmonod graduated from the faculty of medicine at the University of Lausanne in 1978. His doctoral thesis in 1982 was in the field of neuroplasticity. He trained in neurosurgery in Lausanne, then in Queen's Square (London) and Lyon, obtaining his Swiss title in neurosurgery in 1989. He was head of the Department of Functional Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Zürich between 1989 and 2009, and holds the titular professorial chair for functional neurosurgery at the University of Zürich since 1993. He is now head of the Center for Ultrasound Functional Neurosurgery (Solothurn, Switzerland), where he and his team treat with the MR-guided focused ultrasound technique patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and neuropathic pain.
Dr. Laurie Mischley
Dr. Mischley earned her medical degree in Naturopathic Medicine (ND) at Bastyr University and her degrees in Epidemiology (MPH) and Nutritional Sciences (PhD) at the University of Washington. She earned her B.S. in Nutritional Sciences from Pennsylvania State University. Her work is focused on identifying the nutritional requirements unique to people with parkinsonism.
